FROM STAFF REPORTS
The organizing team of Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals is calling upon the community to participate in auditions for speaking and non-speaking roles, as well as volunteer for technical positions for the upcoming 45th season of the Official Outdoor Drama of the State of Tennessee. The iconic Fort Watauga amphitheater at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will once again transform into the late 18th century colonial frontier, showcasing nationally significant events surrounding the American Revolution.
Dr. Keith Young, the director of the 45th season and a seasoned veteran of the production, invites individuals of all ages (6 years and up) to audition for roles that contribute to the rich legacy of Liberty! The outdoor drama has been a staple in the community, and each season brings a new group of cast members and crew to contribute to its historical storytelling.
“We’ve told this story for decades,” expressed Dr. Young. “But it never gets old, and each new group of cast members and crew contribute to the richness of Liberty’s legacy.”
Auditions are scheduled to take place at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park on Sunday, Jan. 28, and Saturday, Feb. 3. In addition to acting roles, there are opportunities for community members to volunteer in technical positions such as backstage assistants, lighting, and audio technicians.
“We need backstage assistants and lighting and audio technicians as well,” Young emphasized. “Putting on a production like this is a unique challenge, and there are many ways for anyone to help.”
Previous seasons of Liberty! have seen the participation of nearly 100 local actors, along with dozens of technical crew and production team members. The drama is known for its commitment to historical accuracy, featuring period-accurate costumes, props, immersive sets, special effects, professional lighting, sound, and a well-maintained amphitheater for the audience. This year, updates to the amphitheater, including new seating, are expected to enhance the overall guest experience.
“Guests will get to enjoy the addition of new seating in the amphitheater this year,” Young shared. “These updates constructed in the off-season will really enhance their comfort.”
Local actors interested in participating are encouraged to register for an audition slot online at Friends of Sycamore Shoals Calendar. Those interested in serving as backstage assistants or part of the lighting and audio crew can contact Dr. Keith Young directly at chazkyou482@gmail.com.
“If you’re interested at all, then you should consider participating,” Young urged. “The history of this region made such an impact on the story of our nation. Helping to tell that story will enrich your life; I know it has enriched mine.”
Liberty! performances are scheduled for the first four weekends in June, beginning in the Fort Watauga Amphitheater at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton. Rehearsals are set to commence in March every Tuesday and Thursday evening until the opening night on June 7. For additional information, visit Friends of Sycamore Shoals.
