Severe weather alert issued for southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia

MORRISTOWN — The National Weather Service office in Morristown, TN, has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of southwest North Carolina, east Tennessee, and southwest Virginia on Wednesday, May 8.

An outbreak of severe weather is increasingly probable across much of the Mid-South, extending into our region from late this afternoon through tonight. All severe hazards are anticipated, including widespread damaging winds, very large hail reaching golf ball size or larger, and tornadoes, with some potential for strong intensity. The highest tornado threat is expected along and west of Interstate 75.

Additionally, heavy rainfall is expected due to multiple rounds of showers and storms. Scattered to possibly numerous instances of flooding are likely, with the greatest risk situated along and west of Interstate 75. This heightened threat is forecasted to be most pronounced from the evening hours until early Thursday morning.
