Mable Chambers Hitchew

Mable Chambers Hitchew, 88, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, N.C.
Mable was born in Jackson, Ohio, to the late Bart and Clara Tolbert Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Don Chambers; her second husband, William “Crick” Hitchew; a son, Harlyn Chambers; and five sisters, Betty Lou Horton, Marie Miller, Nancy Roberts, Mary Ann Cullers and Pauline Ramsey.
Mrs. Hitchew had worked as a nurse’s aide at Life Care of Banner Elk, N.C. She was a charter member of Blevins Chapel Baptist Church and loved basketball, flowers and her church family.
Survivors include her children, Jo Ann Johnson and husband Pete, Linda Chambers, Wilma Townsend and husband Mearl, all of Roan Mountain, Camie McClain and husband Wayne, and Pat Orren, all of Johnson City, Danny Chambers and wife Donna and Bill Chambers and wife Catherine, all of Elizabethton, and Don Chambers Jr. and wife Becky, Johnson City; a sister, Sandra McKinney and husband Carroll, Elizabethton; two brothers, Bart Smith Jr. and wife Susie, Butler, and Steve Smith and wife Becky, Hampton; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her special friend and roommate, Gladys Collins; and another special friend, Louise McKinney.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Hitchew will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, April 25, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Pastor Israel Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at the home at anytime. The graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26, in the Captain Nelson Cemetery on Ripshin. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Blevins Chapel Baptist Church and her grandsons. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:50 a.m. Saturday. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Blevins Chapel Church Youth Choir, 6840 Highway 19E, Roan Mountain, TN 37687.
