In a game that was heralded as the Battle of the Champions, the Lady Cyclones were able to strong arm the crown. Elizabethton defeated defending 2A state champ England Bishop (S.C.) 69-26 on Friday night at the 4th annual Carolina Invitational Tournament in Charleston, S.C.
The game was on the home court of Bishop and was televised in some areas of the state but none of that seemed to phase the Lady Cylones.
“The kid’s played well defensively,” Elizabethton coach Len Dugger said. “We didn’t play all that great offensively but the kids played with a ton of effort.”
The one Lady Cyclone that did play well offensively was Kayla Marosites who scored 16 of the Lady Cyclones 22 points in the first quarter.
“Kayla really carried us early in the game,” Dugger said.
She would finish the night with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Kelci Marosites was right behind her with 13 points, while Sarah Robinson finished the night with nine rebounds.
While the ‘Betsy outscored the Lady Bishops 22-10 in the first quarter, they would go into the locker room up 29-17.
Once the third quarter begun, it was showtime for ‘Betsy. Haley Burleson came off the bench to score seven points and go 3 for 3 from the line, while Emily Kiser nailed a three-pointer and just missed on another as it circled the rim and fell out.
Robinson, Emily Schubert and Megan Pietrowski took over the middle and controlled the boards on both ends of the floor, while the Cyclones outscored the Lady Bishops team 21-7.
Things wouldn’t slow down for Elizabethton as they closed out the game with an impressive performance, tallying 19 points to the opposing teams two.
One key to the Lady Cyclones strong victory was their defense as their press was able to cause 13 steals. They were also able to dish out 20 assists on the night.
With the win, Elizabethton will return to action on Monday at 8 p.m.
