Burleson kicks EHS past Lady Pioneers

A solo goal by Elizabethton High School’s Haley Burleson made all the difference as the Lady Cyclones’ topped the Lady Pioneers 1-0 Thursday at David Crockett High School.

In the second half, with 31 minutes left to play, Burleson found the ball midfield and broke for the goal with Crockett players in close pursuit. Within close range of the goal, Burleson was knocked down but was able to get back to her feet and fire a shot at the goal, snatching EHS’ only point of the game.

“She persevered and got us the shot,” EHS coach Bill McClay said, after Thursday’s match. “You have to play to the whistle, and she did that.”

The Lady Cyclones dominated the overall match, recording 13 shots compared to the Lady Pioneer’s eight. EHS goalie Loran Campbell had seven saves .

Thursday’s win was much welcomed by the Lady Cyclones, after taking a 5-1 loss from Morristown East on Tuesday.

The Lady Cyclones are now 1-1 on the season and will be entering conference play Tuesday at Happy Valley when they face off with the Lady Warriors.

With two games down, Coach McClay hopes to see the Lady Cyclones improve on what they have done so far.

“We will build on what we have done well,” he said. “We also need to fix the stuff we haven’t done well.
