ROAN MOUNTAIN— Led by the sharp shooting of Johanna Johnson the Lady Highlanders were able to storm past the Avery County Lady Vikings 59-40.
Johnson, who was unstoppable from outside the arch, picked up 14 points on the night, 12 of which came from 3-pointers.
“She is one of our shooters,” Cloudland head coach Lucas Andrews said about Johnson. “She is a good lockdown defender for us, and she can shoot the three really well. We expect a lot out of her.”
A 9-point run by the Highlanders in the first period, which saw four points from Shian Strickland and a three from Johnson, allowed Cloudland to jump out to a 11-4 lead. Strickland closed the first period with foul shots to send the Lady Highlanders into the second quarter with a 16-6 lead.
In the second quarter, Cloudland kept up their tempo, conducting an 8-point drive to take a 24-12 lead with 4 minutes left in the first half. Johnson sank her third three of the night to close out the first half, sending her team to the locker room up 34-15.
In the third period, Avery was able to outscore the Lady Landers 15-13, but was not able to keep Cloudland from heading into the fourth period with a 47-30 lead.
In the fourth period, the Lady Landers tacked on 14 more points, while holding Avery County to ten.
Trinity Vines followed up Johanna Johnson with ten. Both Strickland and Payton Johnson ended the night with seven points, while Lisa Ellis closed things out with nine. Stacia Wilson recorded five, and Megan Lunsford closed things out with 3.
