Closings mark Labor Day – the official final holiday of summer

All city and county offices will be closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday – the last holiday of the summer.
Because of the holiday, the garbage collection schedule for the week has been altered. Monday through Thursday will be collected one day late with Thursday and Friday being collected on Friday.
The Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library will be closed as will be the Elizabethton Senior Center.
Also, Carter County Schools and Elizabethton City Schools will be closed for the day.
All state and federal offices will be closed, including window service at the Elizabethton Post Office. There will be no mail delivery.
All financial institutions in the county and city will be closed, however, some retail businesses will be open, including grocery stories and fast-food businesses.
The state will suspend non-emergency construction on Labor Day travel period effective on Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 a.m. Scheduled road work will then resume at the start of normal business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Labor Day is called the “unofficial end of summer” because it marks the end of the cultural summer season, although autumn doesn’t officially start until Sept. 23.
The holiday, set by law, is always the first Monday in September and can be any date from Sept. 1 through Sept. 7.
